Are you gearing up for an exciting vacation this summer? It’s great to get away and enjoy yourself—but unfortunately, things like dental emergencies can still occur while you’re on vacation! Luckily, there are many preventive measures you can take to reduce your chances of experiencing a serious problem that will derail your summer fun. Keep reading to learn more about five tips from your dentist to help you prevent dental emergencies during summer vacation.

1. Schedule a Dental Visit

You should visit your dentist biannually for regular checkups and cleanings; that said, why not schedule one of those visits before leaving on vacation? This will give your dentist the opportunity to inspect your mouth and ensure that there aren’t any potential concerns before your departure. Plus, if there is something that needs to be addressed, you’ll have a larger window to schedule in as many appointments as necessary!

2. Prepare an Emergency Kit

Take a page from the Boy Scout’s handbook and be prepared! Having a small emergency dental kit in the event of an emergency will often make a huge difference. It doesn’t need to be anything fancy, but at least include a card with your dentist’s information, gauze, saline solution, pain relievers, dental wax, and a small container for displaced teeth.

3. Consider a Healthy Summertime Diet

There are plenty of sweet summertime treats that are tasty and perfect for cooling off, but you should be mindful of your diet while you’re on summer vacation. Excessively sugary or acidic foods and drinks can expedite the development of tooth decay, gum disease, and other oral health concerns. Skip the sodas and sweets and opt for things like fruits and vegetables, yogurts, cheeses, and more. Also be sure to drink plenty of water!

4. Practice Sports Safety

There are many fun summertime sports and activities to be enjoyed during vacation, but you should wear the proper safety gear when participating. A mouth guard can go a long way during both contact and noncontact sports. Swimming pool accidents are also a very common cause of dental emergencies—so be extra careful at the pool!

5. Monitor and Maintain Your Oral Health

Whether you’re at home or staying in a hotel, don’t neglect your oral hygiene! Brush your teeth twice a day and floss daily, and regularly inspect your mouth to stay on top of any potential problems. If you notice something seems off, contact your dentist promptly; inaction will lead to further complications!

Summer vacation is meant to be a fun and relaxing reprieve, but a dental emergency can easily disrupt this! Follow these tips to ensure that your mouth is well-protected no matter where you’re headed this summer.
